Bernardo de Gálvez was a Spanish general and colonial governor who played a vital — and often overlooked — role in the American Revolution. While Spain was not officially allied with the United States at first, Gálvez quietly supported the American cause from Louisiana by sending weapons, supplies, and money to aid George Washington and the Continental Army.

Once Spain entered the war against Britain, Gálvez took direct military action. He led bold campaigns along the Gulf Coast, capturing key British strongholds at Baton Rouge, Mobile, and Pensacola. These victories forced the British to divert resources away from the main war effort and helped secure the southern frontier for the Americans.

Gálvez’s leadership ensured control of the Mississippi River, a critical supply route, and weakened British influence in the region at a crucial time in the war. In recognition of his contributions, Bernardo de Gálvez was later named an honorary citizen of the United States — a rare honor shared by only a handful of individuals.
